Henderson Collegiate & W-S Prep win 1A Regions

   1A East Region Championship

Henderson Collegiate 68, North Edgecombe, 48

Henderson Collegiate, (26-10), of Henderson, defeated top-seeded North Edgecombe, (27-3), 68-48 in the 1A East Region Finals at East Carolina University.

With the half-time score knotted at 24-24, Henderson Collegiate used a 15-4 spurt early in the third quarter to take control. They went on to outscore North Edgecombe, 48-24 in the final 16 minutes for the 68-48 win and the 1A East Region championship.

Javonte Waverly

Javonte Waverly, a 6-3 175, guard led Henderson Collegiate with 27 points and 12 rebounds.
Waverly, like most of his teammates, was on the losing end of last year’s 1A state championship, a 55-54 heart-breaker, so winning the 1A East Region again gave them a shot at avenging last year’s disappointment.

Kalib Mathews

Kalib Mathews, a 6-4 180, senior wing, added nine points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the winners.
The lone senior starter for Henderson Collegiate, will play collegiately at Queens University.

Akhiris Holden, a 6-4 175, small forward is an outstanding athlete, with extraordinary verticality.
Holden grabbed 16 rebounds, including seven of the offensive variety and he also scored nine points for the winners.


Amarion McRae, a 6-3 175, guard, led North Edgecombe with 17 points, connecting on 7-17 from the floor, including 3-7 from the arc.

Marcus Tucker Jr.

Marvin Tucker Jr., a 6-3 185, senior wing scored 13 in this game and he grabbed nine rebounds.
An excellent athlete, Marvin has strength, speed and explosion.
Marvin, who also excels in football, baseball and track, averaged 16.2 for the season, as well as nine plus rebounds.
He plays as hard as anyone you’ll see and he’s an outstanding defender

1A West Region Championship

Winston-Salem Prep 65, Chatham Charter 60,

Winston-Salem Prep, (22-8), prevailed, defeating Chatham Charter, (32-2), 65-60, to win the 1A West Region championship.

Troy Mills, a 6-2 guard, led Winston-Salem Prep with 25 points. He’s a good shooter and a solid defender for Coach Andre Gould

Stephen Minor

Stephen Minor, a 5-11 175, senior point guard, added 20 points for the winners.
He’s a good floor leader, with strength, quickness & good ball skills, as well as a solid stroke to the arc. He scored 20 in timely fashion, while also applying good ball pressure.


Jordan Hamilton, 6-3 253, senior forward was the leader all year for Charter Charter. A strong young man, who knows how to use his girth to rebound & get inside buckets, Jordan averaged 20 points per game, got his 20 in this big game.

Trevor Gordon, a 6-2 210, wing, led Chatham Charter with 23 points.
